Dahlia Care

Mountain Belle Flower Farm

Recieving & Storing

All of our tubers will be stored over winter in a cool, climate controlled environment, in antimicrobial cedar beds. Once you receive your packed and shipped tubers, please open your box immediately to allow for air circulation. If you received your tubers in ‘winter pack’, remove all insulation and warmers. You can leave tubers in their cedar sack until planting. Store in a cool, dry, dark place with a regulated temperature, not freezing or humid. Store away from warmth, moisture and direct sunlight.

Planting

You can begin planting dahlias after the risk of frost is over. Plant dahlias where they can receive about 6-8 hours worth of direct sunlight. Space them at a minimum of 8-10 inches in-between each tuber if planting multiple. Plant in moist soil. A safe way to ensure the ‘eye’ sprouts to the surface, plant tuber flat, on the side long ways. Plant 6 inches from the surface. Once your tuber is in the ground, avoid watering until plants sprout, about 2-3 weeks. Tubers do not like to sit in water and can rot easily. Continue watering, but do not over water.

Harvesting

Dahlias are late season bloomers. Blooming from the middle of summer all the way through to the first frost. All of our tubers can be produced as cut flowers, but dahlias also make wonderful garden and landscape plants. Dahlias are ‘cut and come again’, meaning as you harvest blooms from the plant, it encourages the plant to keep producing more blooms.

It is best to harvest your flowers early in the morning, when it is cooler. Dahlias don’t continue to ‘open’ once they are cut, so it is best to cut when they are in full bloom. Clean water is best, changed regularly to maximize vase life. The larger blooms tend to have a shorter cut flower life.
